Hi all,

We had an amazing weekend in Bushy Park after the Official Opening of the facility by the Lord Mayor of Dublin. On Friday afternoon we had over 40 kids playing the junior padel competition and on Sunday we had nearly 60 players taking part in the Beginners and Advanced Padel Tournament. The beginners tournament was won by Geoff and Paloma, who won a padel racquet each, and runners-up were Niall and Barbara, who got vouchers for the padel shop. In the Advanced Tournament the winners were Alvaro and Henry. In second place were Luis and David. Luis won the trophy to the best player of the tournament. The Official Opening of the Bushy Park Tennis & Padel Club took place last Thursday 9th November. The Club was fully completed about a month ago and it has 4 padel courts and 9 tennis courts. This is the first public padel facility in the country and we hope it will be the first of many.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Mícheál MacDonncha, performed the official opening by unveiling a plaque on the left of the pavilion and then went on to cut the ribbon at the front of the clubhouse. The act was preceded by speeches from Superintendent of Dublin City Parks, Mr Leslie Moore, the head of Tennis Ireland, Mr Richard Fahey, the President of the Padel Federation of Ireland, Mr Joe Cabello (see text of his speech below) and the Lord Mayor, who was very proud to be launching the new padel and tennis club and who mentioned he would like to see more public padel courts in other city parks around Dublin.

Great tournament

The Junior Padel Tournament which took place yesterday at the Club was truly a top class competition. We had nearly 40 players again competing in 3 different categories (see winners and runners-up)

5th Class, 6th Class and 1st Years - Sam and Cian / Raphael and Nicholas
2nd and 3rd Years - Alex and Regan  / Jesús and Lee
4th Years, 5th Years, 6th Years - Bosco and Tony /  Jay and Martha

There were a lot of new players taking part and they didn´t seem to mind the adverse weather too much. The competition was played in great spirit throughout.

Well done to everyone!

Next competition will take place in December.

Hurricane Ophelia and Storm Brian gave way to a fantastic Intermediate Low and Intermediate High Padel Tournament. There were over 50 competitors at the Bushy Park Padel Club who gave their all to make the tournament a success and an enjoyable experience.

The weather held well and the temperature rose towards the finals. The Intermediate Low Final was battled our between Alba - Henry and Dario and Joao. Alba and Henry got the better of their opponents to win the tournament. In the Intermediate High Competition we had a very close final between David - Daniel and Alex - Robert. David and Alex came on top displaying incredible resilience and character to turn around a match which they started losing 1 set 0. In the end they won 2 sets to 1 in a final full of great rallies and amazing points. Well done to all for your participation and enthusiasm!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE PADEL FEDERATION OF IRELAND

Hi all padelers,

The Padel Federation of Ireland AGM will be taking place on Sunday 22nd October from 1 pm at Bushy Park Padel Club. The Intermediate Tournament will be going on at that time.

The topics discussed at the AGM will be, among others, our strategic plan, padel promotion, padel coaching development, annual calendar of events, review of last year, financial situation and sponsors.

We expect a good turn out, but if you can´t make it, please send us an email with your thoughts on any of those items on the agenda.

Padel keeps growing at all levels and new people are taking up the sport every day. The new development at Bushy Park has made a huge difference to padel in Dublin and we hope that more facilities will come on stream in the next few months. We wish to thank all committee members and club reps for all their amazing work for the promotion and spreading of padel in the country. In many ways it has been the quiet work of many that has got us where we are now, but we will not be stopping here. We will continue working to spread padel all around Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Some people dream of success, while other people get up in the morning and make it happen. This is a great way of looking a the work of the Federation over the last few years. I have come across very unselfish people who are honest and hard working and for whom the dream of making padel a success was not empty clatter and wishful thinking. I wish to sincerely thank all those who, in many cases voluntarily, work for padel in this country for their dedication and energy to make things happen... I will leave you with a quote from Pele, one of my favourite soccer stars... ´Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.´

See you all at Bushy Park Padel Club on Sunday!

Kind regards,

Joe Cabello
President of the Padel Federation of Ireland.

It was most certainly the boldness and determination that Niall and Regan showed throughout the Junior tournament that brought fortune and, ultimately, success to their impressive padel performance. After a slow start losing their first game on the 1st and 2nd Years category, the pair went on to reach the final and ended up beating Alex and Ilyas by a tight 6-4.

The Junior tournament for the 3rd to 5th Year category also saw success coming to Christian and Oliver, who managed to beat Bosco and Tony after a great come back, winning 7-3 on the tie break.

There were 42 young players competing in the Bushy Park Padel Club inaugural junior tournament and fun was had by all. Watch the space for the next tournament coming up!
